Swimming Pool Leakage

It is more common now that a landed property has a swimming pool, because why not! Diving into a pool in this hot weather that Singapore offers almost all year round and not to mention, having a swimming pool also add value to your home. As suggested in this paragraph itself, today’s topic would be on swimming pool leakage.

Just like any other wet areas within a property, the waterproofing structure of swimming pools will be struck with defects and failure over time. These failures, more often than not appears to be small little cracks and seems harmless, but it can lead to a serious pool leakage if left unattended to. Finding such small cracks alone can consume a significant amount of time and most homeowners do not possess the technical knowledge to get them fixed. Let us give you some tips on identifying pool leakage.

In order to fix the swimming pool leakage, the first step is to determine the seriousness of the leak. The easiest way to spot for a swimming pool leakage is to check the swimming pool’s water levels. Standardly speaking, a swimming pool should not be losing more than two inches of its water per week. Any amount that is greater than that could be a sign of a pool leakage. To go through with this check, you can either mark a line with a permanent marker or use masking tape. After marking the water level, leave it overnight and give it a check again the next morning. If the water level has dropped significantly – anything that is over ¼ of an inch, then it is most likely confirmed that there is a pool leakage.

What is causing the swimming pool leakage? It can either be structural leaks or plumbing leaks. As there are many components in a swimming pool, it can be pretty tedious to determine the source of the pool leakage. However, areas that are more vulnerable to leaks would be those that have gaps or seals, mainly the filter, heater, pump, or valves. Pay more attention to these areas and check each of them for a leak. If there is nothing obvious, then it may be waterproofing failure. Most common issues lies in the waterproofing sealants or incorrect/ insufficient waterproofing. This may cause water to leak through the grouts in the pool over time.

Once you have identified the source of the pool leakage, do some research and look up for trustworthy and experienced contractors, schedule for an inspection and ask for a quote. If you are looking to DIY, you can purchase some rubberized pool paint or hydraulic cement, and simply coat/ fill in any gaps or cracks. However, do make sure that you drain your pool and keep it completely dry. This would usually take at least 3 days to a week.

However for a more long lasting and stable method, homeowners should consider re-installing the waterproofing works. This would eliminate any pool leakage for many years to come. At SWC Construction, we provide a non hacking and long lasting solution, that is High PU Injection Grouting. This method is an injection of liquid grouting material into the structure under pressure. During the grouting process, fissures (an opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting in structures) and pores are filled with the grouting material, which subsequently hardens and connects the disintegrated surfaces. PU injection grouting can help to fill the cracks fully as once the injection is administered, the foam expands to fill in the entire space of each crack. This fullness gives full coverage and protection from any water seepage. Another advantage of PU injection grouting is that the atmosphere’s moisture content does not matter. The foam can be injected into wet areas, which means you do not have to wait till the leakage area is completely dry before taking action against further water damage. Not to mention PU injection grouting remains flexible too.
