Balcony Leakage – Signs that your Balcony is leaking

It is very common for most houses or apartments to have a balcony these days. Balcony serves as a relaxing spot, where hammocks are placed alongside with pots and plants. It is safe to say that balconies are most homeowners’ sanctuary. With that being said, it is essential to take care of such an important part of the house.

Singapore experiences harsh and extreme weather all year round, from the scorching sun to sudden rainfalls. Your balconies are constantly exposed to such harsh conditions, and not to mention, there are also movement pressures that are caused by humans. Due to these factors, it is inevitable that you will experience a balcony leak one day.

There can be many other causes to a balcony leak. But the most common ones would be due to failed/ worn off waterproofing, improper way of waterproofing solution application, or incorrect waterproofing method used. It is important to have your balconies protected, with the right kind of waterproofing method that will last you a long time.

When you have noticed porous, cracked or loose tiles in your balcony, do not leave it unattended. Loose or cracked tiles allows water to penetrate through easily and they tend to produce hollow noise when you step on them, thus making it easy to identify. Aside from that, homeowners should not neglect tile grouts as well. This may seem like an unimportant thing to look out for, however, cracked grouts can also lead to water seeping into the flooring, which can cause a balcony leak as well.

To fix a balcony leak, most contractors will remove the old tiles of the balcony, apply a coat of waterproofing membrane, followed by installing a new set of tiles. At SWC Construction, we provide a non-hacking and long lasting waterproofing solution, which is High Pressure PU Injection Grouting. This method is an injection of liquid grouting material into the structure under pressure. During the grouting process, fissures (an opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting in structures) and pores are filled with the grouting material, which subsequently hardens and connects the disintegrated surfaces. PU injection grouting can help to fill the cracks fully as once the injection is administered, the foam expands to fill in the entire space of each crack. This fullness gives full coverage and protection from any water seepage. Another advantage of PU injection grouting is that the atmosphere’s moisture content does not matter. The foam can be injected into wet areas, which means you do not have to wait till the leakage area is completely dry before taking action against further water damage. Not to mention PU injection grouting remains flexible too.
