What Is Injection of PU?
A waterproofing technique called PU injection, also known as polyurethane grouting or injection uses expanding injected polyurethane to seal up cracks or voids in concrete. When applied to the lower floor ceiling where the leak occurs or the underside of the seepage area, this is particularly effective at stopping water leaks.
Process
On the underside of the ceiling, a hole must first be drilled before polyurethane foam can be injected under pressure. Any cracks or voids created by water damage are forced upward by the pressure and filled with polyurethane when it expands. In cases where concrete slabs are actively leaking, the use of PU injection is advised.
Property of Polyurethane (PU)
Injection of polyurethane, a liquid resin, can fill voids and cracks in concrete building structures. Within minutes of being injected into concrete to repair a leak, polyurethane changes chemically from a liquid to a solid.
Because of its inherent qualities, polyurethane is a good choice for waterproofing. Its quick curing time makes it a highly effective material for plugging active leaks. Its low viscosity makes it suitable for sealing small cracks after moisture curing. When polyurethane is injected, it will cure and keep its flexibility, allowing for subsequent movement in the structure while maintaining the voids’ seal, stopping the leak from happening.
Polyurethane’s benefits for waterproofing
It is helpful to know that the PU injection method has some advantages over other waterproofing techniques if you are thinking about using it to repair leaks.
A versatile polymer, polyurethane is used in industry for coating and insulation purposes. It is both a powerful adhesive and waterproofing substance.
Polyurethane will protect well against membrane cracks and building movements that could impair the effectiveness of waterproofing because it is flexible and tough. Its high degree of elasticity makes it resistant to both thermal expansion and deterioration brought on by exposure to sunlight.
This makes it one of the best methods for use on surfaces like balconies and roofs.
Due to its ability to seal tiny hairline cracks that are otherwise difficult to spot and its quick drying characteristics, it is also frequently used to repair active leaks. It is a relatively cheap and clean solution when compared to other techniques that heavily hack. Additionally, it requires little to no additional maintenance.
Injection of PU to Fix Cracks
Any cracks that need to be filled in with PU injection will be filled with a mixture of water and the polymer foam-type PU grout.
After that, the mixture will continue to expand until there is no more room to fill, successfully blocking any openings for water to enter the material.
Residential Buildings
In particular, water entering your home from the exterior can be repaired at a low cost by using PU injections. Additionally, PU can be injected into the roof to stop further roof leaks and harm to belongings and articles.
Commercial Assets
PU injections are frequently used to fix factory or warehouse flooring that has been harmed by repeated, extended use of powerful equipment like forklifts. PU grouting can also be used in numerous locations where there are obvious leaks. It is frequently used in places like ceilings, piping, and drainage. You can use it to fix any rain or leak-related damage to your properties, similar to its residential uses.
Common Reasons for Building Cracks
Poor Drainage
Building cracks are primarily caused by moisture. Poor drainage can result in water seepages that over time erode concrete and other building materials by causing holes to form. Nearly all properties are vulnerable to water, humidity, and dampness damage. They may result in leaks and cracks; which PU injection can effectively treat.
Large Load
Over time, heavy loads from the regular movement of machinery and vehicles, such as forklift trucks and lorries, will cause cracks in the floor. Cracks can often be severe, especially in areas with heavy traffic.
Use and Abuse
The most frequent reason for building cracks is still water. Buildings may develop cracks with time due to wear and tear, especially if maintenance is not performed to a sufficient level. This is crucial in places like balconies, wet areas that are exposed to water, and roofs. Without requiring extensive renovation, plugging these cracks with PU can help to prevent leaks.
Repairing PU Waterproofing Leaks
Wider environmental factors, such as thermal movement and soil movement from nearby construction projects, among others, can cause cracks in concrete structures. Minor cracks won’t result in any obvious leaks or damage, despite the fact that they are not yet severe. But over time, cracks will enlarge—typically as a result of water intrusion—causing leaks and property damage.
