Roof Repair and Inspection

Many people assume that if your roof isn’t leaking, there’s nothing to be worried about, but periodic checks and inspections can help prevent damage later on. Routine visual inspection can help you prevent major wear and tear and save on major repairs or replacements in the long run.

Do a regular walk around the roof and inspect the roof from the outside and make observations. Identify areas with signs of wear and tear, aging, or sagging. Watch for piles of debris or leaves. These spots can retain moisture that can lead to major roof damage. Identify buckled shingles or granule loss. Curled or missing shingles will create easy access for water to drip into your home, leaving your family less protected during raining weather conditions.

Not every home has an attic but if you do, check it regularly for signs of roof wear and tear. It is ideal to check for leaks after heavy rain. Use chalk to mark where you saw water infiltration so that, even after the rain stops, you’ll be able to identify the problem spots. Note if wooden features show signs of decay or discoloration. These are all signs of a bigger problem.

Clean gutters are important to maintain water drainage. Check the gutters and the roof overhangs. Annual gutter cleaning can prolong the life of your roof. Proper placement of the downpipe will help the water divert away from your home’s foundation and basement. Check for signs of rotting, as well as a build-up of leaves or animal nests.

If you are fit enough to do so, climb to the highest point on a ladder and visually check the roof. No need to step onto the roof but check for signs of damage. If you see anything odd with the gutters, flashings, or vent pipes that might be causing water leakage, call a waterproofing specialist to conduct an assessment.

Although it might be tempting to climb on the roof, this is not advised. Stepping on angled roofs or weak spots could be risky, and the damage incurred might void the warranty on the roof. If you have an aerial drone, you can use it to get a visual assessment. Different roofing materials have different lifespans. Keeping a constant eye on your roof can help you to detect signs of water leakage. When you spotted an unpleasant stain mark, bubbled paint, mould growth on your ceiling, it is time to find out what is it roof leak about and not leave it unattended.
